Passive Infrared or PIR motion sensors detect infrared light emitted by objects and detect changes caused by motion. They are ideal for smart home applications such as security systems, lighting controls, thermostats, etc.
PIR motion sensors detect the difference between the infrared light emitted by a stationary object in a room and a moving human or animal. The sensors contain infrared detectors that detect infrared radiation and can identify changes as small as a few degrees. Most motion sensors have lenses or Fresnel lenses to focus the infrared signals onto the detector. When there is motion in the room, the temperature pattern changes and the sensor detects this, causing it to switch on lights or trigger the security alarm.
PIR motion sensors are very useful for smart home security systems. They can detect potential intruders and trigger the security alarm to ward off burglars.
